Letter from the CPAS President - Dr Simon Whyte

November 9th, 2015

Dear Colleagues

It is a year since I became President of the Canadian Pediatric Anesthesia Society &, with a year of my term to run, I feel I am nowhere near halfway through my to-do list!

Two major structural changes have occupied a large amount of my time so far, both very much ‘behind-the-scenes’ issues & neither seemingly very exciting at first blush, but both have far-reaching implications and present important opportunities for the evolution of CPAS.

SmartTots Releases Updated Consensus Statement Regarding Anesthesia Safety in Young Children

Health experts say growing evidence points to need for more research; urge caution but not alarm

San Francisco – October 13, 2015 – SmartTots today released an updated consensus statement that emphasizes a need for more research into the safety of anesthetics and sedatives administered to infants and young children under the age of 4. The statement was endorsed by 19 leading U.S. and global health organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia.

CARF Partners with Smart Tots for Pediatric Anesthesia Research

Published December 11th, 2013

Earlier this year, CARF entered into a 2-year agreement with the IARS to fundraise under the Smart Tots banner to raise money for pediatric anesthesia research, specifically, anesthetic effects on pediatric neurological development.   Some may recall that Smart Tots was created through a public-private partnership between the IARS and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the spring of 2011.  Since that time, they have engaged multiple stakeholders in both public and private sectors in their fund-raising endeavors.
