CPAS is a non-profit incorporated entity that is run by an elected Board of Directors. The term of elected service is 2 years. Existing Directors may stand for re-election when their term expires.

In 2016 the terms of several existing CPAS Board members will be complete. The positions of Vice-Chair, Secretary and Member-at-Large will become vacant. Inaccordance with its By-Laws, elections to the Board must be held at the AGM, in Banff, at the Scientific Meeting. We are seeking nominations for election to the 2016-2018 Board. All CPAS members with an active subscription are eligible and invited to consider standing for election. The Board seeks a careful balance of youth & experience, as well as broad geographical representation across Canada.

Canadian Pediatric Fasting Guidelines Ratified 2018

The membership of CPAS at the AGM ratified new Canadian Pediatric Anesthesia Fasting Guidelines and agreed to support the development of comprehensive fasting guidelines through the Canadian Pediatric Anesthesia Fasting Guidelines Working Group*. The ratified motion reads as follows:

The Canadian Pediatric Anesthesia Society endorses allowing and encouraging clear fluid intake up to 1 hour before elective anesthesia or sedation.

This was the level of granularity where we left the recommendations, and it will be up to individual institutions to develop protocols based on these guidelines. For many institutions, current fasting guidelines will look like this:

For elective sedation and anesthesia, the following fasting times are recommended:

8 hours: full meal, fatty foods

6 hours: light meal, milk, infant formula, fortified expressed breast milk

4 hours: breast milk

1 hour: clear fluids

The Anesthesia Social Media Hashtag Project.

The Anesthesia Social Media Project seeks to increase the conversations among anesthesiologists by providing hashtags commonly to anesthesia.  It is the brainchild of Drs Clyde Matava (CPAS Communications Officer, founder of @PedsAnesthesia and @innov8doc) and Nan Gai (@nanesthetistSocial Media Faculty Lead at the Department of Anesthesia, University of Toronto)

Anesthesiologists, Anesthesia journals and Anesthesia Professional Associations worldwide are encouraged to use common hashtags to increase the reach and depth of their social media posts and conservations.  Below is an Hashtag Guide for Anesthesiologists.

To submit new hashtags, please contact @nanesthetist on Twitter

Hello Colleagues:

My name is David Rosen and I am the Chair of the Canadian Pediatric Anesthesia Society (CPAS). On behalf of the CPAS Board, I would like to thank you for your participation in our organization and encourage you to join us again in 2018.

CPAS represents the specialty of Pediatric Anesthesia at a national level and, through collaborations with other representative organizations, at an international level. We plan, support and implement educational opportunities at our stand-alone meetings and at the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society (CAS) meetings. We promote national Pediatric Anesthesia tele-rounds and online discussion forums.

Our members lead Canadian efforts at education, research, administration, quality improvement and knowledge translation in all areas of pediatric anesthesia, pediatric perioperative medicine and pediatric pain medicine. We provide a national venue for ongoing learning, improvement of outcomes and innovation in the provision of care to infants, children, youth and their families.

Our on-line presence continues to expand. We have a discussion forum which practitioners use to talk about issues relating to clinical cases, administrative challenges, equipment issues, guidelines and other areas of interest to Pediatric Anesthesiologists and their colleagues. This can be accessed by members via our website (pediatricanesthesia.ca).

Our website also allows members to purchase CPAS membership directly. It contains information about upcoming meetings and members can access educational material from our recent meeting on-line. There is information about fellowship opportunities nationally and the ability to liaise with other CPAS members. CPAS also provides a discounted rate to the journal Pediatric Anesthesia and members have access to its app.

Our popular Twitter account (@PedsAnesthesia) is widely used to disseminate the latest articles of interest to Pediatric Anesthesiologists, provide live updates of our annual meetings and promote real time discussion internationally.

Your 2016-2018 CPAS Board consists of the following people:

Papu Nath_______Member at Large
Sarah Stevens____Chair of CPAS 2018 Local Organizing Committee
Katherine Tayor__Secretary
Koto Furue______Treasurer
Desi Reddy______Chair of the Scientific Committee
Clyde Matava____Communications Officer
Jeremy Luntley___Vice Chair

I would encourage everyone to attend the CPAS 2018 meeting in Halifax October 26-28 taking place at the Delta Halifax. It promises to be an exceptional conference!

Please do not hesitate to contact me at any time with questions, suggestions or ideas about how to improve our organization and our specialty. Also please join CPAS now either through our website or in conjunction with CAS membership renewal.
Thank you very much.
